In 2001, Cate Blanchett joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, in the role of Galadriel, directed by Peter Jackson.
The film is based on The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien (1954), the first volume of the novel The Lord of the Rings.

It was the first part of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It features an ensemble cast including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, Ian Holm, and Andy Serkis.
Cate Blanchett has recounted that her agent told her she was being considered for an elf role, directed by Peter Jackson, with a three-week shoot, and asked her, “You’re not interested, are you?” Of course Blanchett didn’t hesitate to say yes, and flew to New Zealand, giving us a wonderful Galadriel.
