Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Minnie Driver, Rupert Everett, and Jeremy Northam star in this story based on Oscar Wilde’s 1985 play, adapted and directed by Oliver Parker.
Cate Blanchett plays Lady Chiltern, a married woman in love with her ideal husband.
Sir Robert Chiltern (Jeremy Northam) is a successful, wealthy government minister with a loving wife, Lady Gertrude Chiltern (Cate Blanchett). All of this is threatened when Mrs. Cheveley (Julianne Moore) arrives in London with incriminating evidence of a past misdeed.
Sir Robert turns to his friend Lord Goring, a seemingly idle womanizer—much to his father’s dismay—for help. Goring has known the lady for some time, and the plan to help his friend has unexpected consequences.
Cate is completely in love with Northam, and despite a brief separation, they manage to overcome Julianne Moore’s apparent scheming.
This is the first film released since Cate’s first Oscar nomination for Elizabeth (1998).
