In the adaptation of Eli Roth’s video game ‘Borderlands,’ Cate Blanchett plays Lilith, one of the four characters from the original game who has remained a supporting character in the franchise ever since.
In the video game universe, Lilith is one of the six Sirens, a group of women with incredible powers. Furthermore, the director knows the actress well, as Blanchett and Roth previously worked together on ‘The House with a Clock in Its Walls.’
The film is an adaptation of the original ‘Borderlands’ game, which was released in 2009 and spawned three sequels: ‘Borderlands 2’ in 2012, ‘Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel’ in 2014, and ‘Borderlands 3’ in 2019. The first game was set in the distant future, at a time when various megacorporations seek control of several planets to colonize and exploit their riches and mineral resources.
The character of Lilith has been an important part of the franchise from the very beginning, and seeing Cate Blanchett in a video game adaptation is no surprise after her superb work in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. The screenplay for ‘Borderlands’ is by Craig Mazin, author of ‘Chernobyl’, who is also working on another video game adaptation with the HBO television series ‘The Last of Us’.
“With Eli’s vision and Craig’s script, we believe we’ve cracked the code to bring the anarchic world of ‘Borderlands’ to the big screen in a fresh, compelling, and cinematic way that will appeal to both moviegoers and game fans,” said Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, when the film was announced earlier this year.
