Eight women, led by Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), younger sister of the late Danny Ocean, attempt an impossible heist at the Met Gala in New York City.
After being released from prison, Debbie Oceans reunites with her former partner, Lou (Cate Blanchett), to convince her to join the robbery. Debbie planned the heist during her time behind bars. After persuading Lou to join their team, they begin assembling a group of women with unique skills. The team consists of Rose Weil (Helena Bonham Carter), who is in debt to the IRS; Amita (Mindy Kaling), a jewelry maker desperate to move out of her mother’s house; Nine Ball (Rihanna), a hacker; Constance (Awkwafina), a street hustler and pickpocket; and Tammy (Sarah Paulson), a friend of Debbie’s who secretly sells stolen goods from her suburban garage and can’t forget her past.
Debbie’s plan is to steal the Toussaint, a $150 million Cartier necklace, during the Met Gala in New York City. They intend to use Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), the Gala’s co-host, to steal the diamond. Daphne will wear the necklace during the gala, and unbeknownst to her, they will switch the real Toussaint for a fake. Since the film centers on a Met heist, you can be sure there are plenty of filming locations to see in New York City, many of which you can visit on the New York Film & Television Tour and the When Harry Met Seinfeld Tour.
The heist takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), where most of the film is set. The Met is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
At Veselka, a restaurant in the East Village, Debbie and Lou have breakfast to go over the plan for the first time. Debbie convinces Lou to join the team and steal the diamond. Veselka is located at 144 Second Avenue, Manhattan.
The heist is planned in a modern loft converted into a church. The Bushwick United Methodist Church is located at 1139 Bushwick Avenue, Brooklyn.
When Debbie tries to convince jewelry expert Amita, she travels to Queens to make her an irresistible offer. The street is located on 74th Street in Queens. The film opens with Debbie being released from prison.
The correctional facility where this scene was filmed is closed and used only for the movie. The Arthur Kill Correctional Facility is located on Staten Island. The scene then continues to the Plaza Hotel, at Central Park South and Fifth Avenue.
The Cartier Mansion, located on Fifth Avenue, is where the necklace was designed and later replaced.
